Humans of Xero: Elise Wei

Welcome to Humans of Xero! It’s a series about some of the awesome humans that work at Xero. We’ll talk a bit about their work, their passions and what makes them tick.

We’d like to introduce you to Elise Wei, Frond End Developer. We sat down and had a chat about life in and out of Xero.

‘It’s great to know the work I’m doing has a real impact on small business’

Tell us about your role

My role as a front-end developer at Xero involves growing and maintaining our react component library which is part of a larger design system. The code written by my team is used by all the development teams across Xero so I’m always collaborating and supporting our Xero engineers around the globe.

Why did you join Xero?

On a whim I applied to a campaign which brought the best tech talent to Wellington. Out of 48,000 applicants I was chosen as one of the lucky 94 people to be flown to New Zealand. In my Xero interview I just immediately fell in love with the people. The managers I met were open, honest, and dedicated to their work and teams.

I really like the feeling of Xero’s startup culture although it’s actually a large and established company that is growing at speed. It’s also great to know the work I’m doing has a real impact on small business – helping to provide people with the tools and resources they need to be successful, achieve their goals and do what they love.

What’s working at Xero like?

Since Xero is a global company with offices around the world, many of my team members are based in other cities. This means I have to find a balance between deep-focus ‘flow’ time for work as well as enough time to talk with my team. We keep in touch through a mix of instant messaging and real-time video calls which works really well for us. I also love that I get to connect with engineers in Wellington and around the world to understand the way they use the tools my team provides.

Tell us something #human about yourself

My move to Wellington was a much more difficult adjustment than I expected. I didn’t know anyone in New Zealand before moving here, so meeting new people, connecting and building friendships was initially a big challenge for me.  However Xero has a really friendly and inclusive culture and it’s been the relationships I’ve built at work that have been key to the smooth transition to life in New Zealand.
