This Pride Month, we’re celebrating diversity

On Saturday 11 May, Wellington went full Rainbow – and Xero was right there, joining in the celebrations!

The Wellington International Pride Parade is a celebration of diversity – primarily that of the LGBTQIA+ community and our allies. This is the second year that Xero has participated, and if all goes to plan, it certainly won’t be the last.

Xero’s participation was fully a grassroots effort. No leadership or marketing initiatives involved. Just Xeros from all over our company, looking to have fun and celebrate the diversity of Wellington and Xero. With our building lit up in rainbow lights, the Xero Mini on board, and support from our leadership team, we shouted our pride from the rooftops.

How can employers support LGBTQIA+ staff?

Actions speak louder than words. For companies to truly support their staff, there needs to be a conscious effort to avoid excluding language, and to reject homophobic language. While events like Pride are best organised from a “ground up” point of view, having clear support from the leadership teams goes a long way. And remember, what folks really value is being treating equally – LGBTQIA+ teammates should be treated the same as their straight, cisgendered colleagues!

What does it mean to be a workplace ally?

Pride in ourselves and pride in a company that supports and encourages everyone to bring their full, authentic selves to work every day. So treat everyone in your workplace like the #humans they are! If you see or hear homophobic, transphobic, or other discrimanatory discussion, a quick “Ya know… we don’t do that kind of thing here…” is appreciated. And please, PLEASE join us at Pride! Allies are always welcome to the party!

What does Pride Month mean to you?

While Pride Month is a shared celebration, it means something different to everyone. For me, it’s a chance to celebrate our community; and to remember and honour those that fought/fight to get us the rights we have. This year marks 50 years since the Stonewall Riots – which has a great deal of significance to me as I grew up in the States. It’s also a reminder to think about how far we still have to go to be TRULY equal on a global scale – and that we need to take action to get closer to true equality.
